What is the best way to stain a new wooden garden fence?
We just installed a wooden garden fence and would like to stain it solid white. The wood is treated...any advice on the staining process? We have been told to wait 2-3 months to stain.....but, can I use sandpaper to open up the pores to get started sooner? Thanks for your help!

Normally you are supposed to wait 60 days but you could try sand a little section first and sand with the grain don't go across the grain as this will scratch it and it will show up when you stain if you are happy with the section you done then go ahead however I do recommend a waiting period of some sort 30 days maybe it would be a shame to ruin it and then have to replace it.Good luck.

Yes, you do need to wait 2 months, minimum, for the wood to age correctly. So just relax and use this time to go to your local Home Depot or lowes for research before you start. . The sales reps. there will show you different techniques to get your desired results. They may recommend a pretreat process before you start. I would recommend the gel-stain. It’s a semi-solid look if you are open to that look. I did one and it looked great. Make sure your product has a sealer in it or purchase a sealer also. Without it, all your hard work won’t last. Hope this helps. Remember do this project in the morning or later afternoon. Paint products do better when applied not in direct, hot sunlight. Remember this! Painting is the easy part of your project, To make your final product look great, do all your prep work, sanding, cleaning, etc. before you start. Then you will have a finished product that you’ll be proud of! Hope this helps. I’m a home contractor.
