the fence belongs to both of you
What about a living hedge? Or you put up some lattice work and grow a nice vine plant.
Even though it’s not your responsibility, would you (and he) consider sharing the cost of the repairs?
Put up a new back fence on your property.
I’m with Sassy. If I don’t want to look at his property or have him looing at mine I’m putting up some sort of privacy fence on my side of the fenceline.
You are responsible for your space, no matter who or what is on the adjoining property. I totally agree to use some sort of a hedge; way cheaper and far more relaxing! Think of it as not spending money on him, but for yourself and your view. If there was a car parts junkyard on the adjoining property you know you’d be investing in your view in a heartbeat!
If the fence is broken and dangerous or infringes your privacy you can force him to repair the fence http://www.adviceguide.org.uk has information concerning common problems with neighbors. You may have to carry out the work yourself and bill him for the work carried out.You could in the short term hang a washing line across the garden from fence to fence and screen using decorators sheets these are quite cheep and I believe can be dyed using your washing machine. You can erect a fence inside the boundary line to hide his fence but you will lose say six inches of your land.A letter threatening action is usually enough but it is always far better to resolve these issues amicably because it is horrible to live next to neighbors you do not get on with.
