@btigtime2 — I got the one I use for my videos used off Ebay. It’s a Fuji FinePix E550 and I got it for around $60 plus shipping. That was well over a year ago, I use it a lot, and it’s still going strong. I’ve even dropped it a few times! It’s really a still camera that has a video function that is really pretty good. I ended up buying my husband one too because he liked mine so much. A rabbit tractor sounds ideal!!!

@Michigansnowpony Thanks. My camera takes sucky video, I keep saying I’m going to buy something better but I come out of Best Buy holding my chest.
My Rabbits are not really free range. I built a rabbit tractor and move it around about every week.

@btigtime2 –Your baby is adorable, but oh, I was sooo hoping you’d posted some videos of what you’re doing!!! I think, like John, you could be a big inspiration to folks on youtube. (Especially interested in your free-range rabbits)

People need to have a backyard garden and teach their kids how to plant and harvest. Help them understand where food comes from. For those of us who eat meat, we should encourage free range and grass fed. We should respect the animals who give their lives to sustain ours. Everyone should watch the movie Food Inc. with their kids, you will be surprised what happens the next time you go to the store with them! It was life changing for us. Thanks John for your vids. We love them! Noreen.

Lots. I would be cautious. Only eat common ones you know are edible. I dont eat Solanaceae family such as tomato, potatoe, pepper, eggplant. flowers or leaves. Only fruits. look them up on a site called pfaf. o r g Not everything is edible..

  6. growingyourgreens

Trust me.. I have looked into that. Probably will grow hydroponic on the roof, as soil weighs alot..

Question…is there any vegetable flowers or leaves (besides tomatoes) that you CANT eat? Or herbs even?

  9. Whippetfest

Your plants look so great! I’m putting in a green house and a small garden area this year. After watching your videos it’s made me want to have more garden space. Luckily if I want to expand I can. Thanks again for all the inspiration!

You’re definitly the guy to open up one of those. There’s a few here in the part of the central valley where I live, and they’re gaining in popularity.

They have a really interesting flavour. Words can not describe.. Its a little spicy like the leaves, but also “sweet” because of the pollen. It reminds me of a “smokey” or BBQ flavor. You can grow arugula from seed really easy, just throw them down, and water them. they grow like weeds!

can’t help but notice you are always raving about arugula flowers; it makes me want to grow them just so I can see what the “big deal” is. What do they taste like? :)

I have to agree. The way American’s eat nowadays is unbelievable. And people in their 30′s and 40′s are having heart attacks because of it.
I am growing not only because it is more healthy for my family, but I have such pride in serving what I grow. I finally found a local farmers market and went today. I was amazed to see only one booth with veggies. There were some plants (non edible) and jewelry, and even a booth to adopt dogs. I was amazed. The one veggie booth was not even organic.

Here in Laos, I need all the calories I can get. I wish Americans would share the wealth instead of overeating. That way, everyone has enough to eat. I’m sure Laos would be very grateful. But nobody seems to care about us.

I agree, the North American diet has changed so much in recent times. There is nothing like home grown food!

Good observation with the whole tomato reference…..real true with me….great explanation for even having a garden….you’re kind of a jedi gardener going master

Tomatoes & fries as veggies: Jamie Oliver effect? :)

  19. JohnnyBravo704

Totally agree with you John. The American diet sure has changed over the last 60-70 years. People do whatever they can do make more money, including tampering with the food we eat.

Haveing the raised beds does away with all the “exercise” from regular gardening…all the stooping and hoeing. Turning over the soil with a pitch fork. That’s alot of work! But good for you. I like your garden way better as I don’t like to bend down or stooping.

  21. VivianRinSC

I think there’s a very strong connection between good health and gardening… :)

  22. madeofyucca

Could you support the three family’s plus your own household with the number of beds you have right now? Or will you need to create more space?

    Thanks for the inspiring vids!

  23. jimbogu3

John you have really inspired me. I was on “vacation” this week and built 2 aquaponics gardens and 5 grow boxes with all kinds of things planted in them. I have two more grow boxes to build and I will have my snow peas planted. Thanks for the vids. Keep ‘em comin’!!!!!

  24. halleysmommy

I’m wondering how long it’ll take until you start growing greens on your rooftop. Or maybe that’s already in the works… ;p

Very good John. Glad to see your artistic style expanding. Ronnie & Minh
