Nice video on composting. I am showing this to the kids as we are planning a compost bin, or maybe just a pile for next year to use in the garden and flower beds I’m growing.

o a tip. do not plant directly into compost.
mix it in with existing soil for log term better garden soil.
and it is just to spungie.

composting is the breaking down of material…….. wich is rotting via microbs the same thing that happens on the forest floor.
and you dont need a plastic barrel with holes in it. we make 20,000 cubic yards every six months piled on the ground in wind rows.

    Even plastic and metal… eventually

it doesn’t matter. Even dry it will eventually compost. Just makes it take longer thats all. Everything composts… eventually… allways.

Actually, you don’t want the compost to be in full sun because it will dry out. You need to maintain the moisture level of a wrung-out sponge. The microbes need proper aeration, water, and variation of carbon and nitrogen rich materials in order to make compost.

k thx today i used a chicken wire fence to put the compost in… so im all set

  13. TheBrassHole

No. The best composter is the ground in the corner of your yard or out in the open. A compost pile in full sun composts faster than a pile in the shade. But either way, it will all compost.

  14. hailstrm4

    do you need the composter???

  15. LaminatedGardenGuide

No garden is complete without a compost pile! Compost is a soil conditioner, mulch and fertilizer all wrapped into one. It feeds the soil microorganisms that help plants stay healthy, adds nutrients to the soil, and helps clay soil drain better and sandy soil retain water

I have composted every way. The best compost is made in a pile on the open ground.

Shredding the wast will accelerate the process.
Peeing , yes urinating on the heap will act like a catalyst.
Keep the contents turned over weekly if poss.
    cover the top
Use rough fibrous materials as well to keep the pile from clogging.
Ask neighbours to give their cut grass veg peeling as well.

That was very informitive and great info. I didn’t know you could go to the garbage garage and ask them about composters. Around here, if anyone has a composter, they are mostly homemade ones. I did notice that most of them have ventilation, but I didn’t know that it aided in having better composting and helped to reduce the smell. I didn’t know either that you should layer the wet compost, dry compost, etc. Thanks for posting. It was great. :+)

Funny what you were saying about local government getting everyone to buy these . They did the same thing here in England . I’m not sure they are necesary though , four stakes and a length of chicken wire wrapped round it will do and it costs less.

lawn clippings are also a good insulator like straw and can be used to protect from frost in early spring and late fall.

  22. BackYardGardeningTip

    thanks for the info.

We have a composter now and plan to start using it this spring. I have never seen one in use, other than watching videos online so we are excited to be starting our own.

    lol. and i’m mcdonald!

  24. shortattentionspan1

Yes a compost pile must be a balanced mix of dry and wet stuff – when I cut my lawn I put the clippings in a sunny spot in my garden and let the grass dry out before putting it in my composter. This is my basic dry stuff, then I put in the wet kitchen scraps. Three weeks later I have compost!
